Since the rate of violence against women has increased during the COVID19-crisis, we think it is appropriate to raise even more awareness on Femicide and therefore have decided to turn June into our "End Femicide" month. As part of our Femicide Volume XIII Publication we have received several videos from experts and activists defining Femicide and stating why data collection is important. Back in 2007 in New York City, the UNSA started off as a global network of UN academics and practitioners dedicated to create and promote interdisciplinary, practice-oriented studies with a clear focus on the UN system. Ever since, our work has aimed at the interconnected triad of UN research, teaching and (political-/diplomatic) practice. With the help of events, webinars, publications and digital platforms, we continue to build bridges between these different UN worlds while bringing the next UN generation’s views and ideas to the forefront.
With the enormous know-how, insights and creative power such a diverse global expert community offers, UNSA is able to deliver normative and practice-oriented impulses relating to the work of the United Nations system in all its facets, with a special (but not the sole) focus on the SDGs and their implementation.

Our mission at UNSA Vienna is to shed light on issues or perspectives that may not receive a lot of visibility. For this purpose, we engage with renowned diplomats and experts to create a relevant dialogue. Within the framework of the SDGs, one of the goals is to find practical solutions that take into account the cultural, social and societal context. Realistic concepts, critical views and discourses are welcome to challenge the international community and everyone else interested/involved to look past the simple explanation of the SDGs. We address an internationally orientated community, but specific and local conditions and their structures are to be examined.
Vienna serves as an international centre linking the university, international organisations, the UN and foreign representations - a great treasure box to tap into. Therefore, to bring in a niche for this blog as to not serve as a competition of the UN’s SDG Blog, https://www.un.org/en/desa/sdg-blog, we will focus per month on a different representation based in Vienna, which can involve additional interviews from other experts and overseas representations to support the overall story - covering topics such as feminist foreign policy, film culture as a means to justice, and climate solutions. This will strengthen our partnerships and position as a niche org based in Vienna.

Closely associated with the gender-related killings of women (femicide), UNSA Vienna also focuses on the broader issue of violence against women. It has organized various events on selected and not that well-known dimensions, e.g. violence against elderly women, misogynistic hate crimes, VAW against women in flight.

The FEMICIDE team’s work is aimed at raising awareness about and promoting exchange on the topic of femicide, the killing of women because they are women, within the UN framework.
Since 2012 the FEMICIDE team, which is wholeheartedly dedicated to ending all forms of violence against women, has called for global action, to end the killing of women because they are women, shown what has been done and what has to be done to improve the safety of women in conflict and in flight, made people aware of the abuse and femicide of older women, tackled the issue of contemporary forms of enslavement of women and girls, attracted attention to state responsibility with regard to femicide, and urged the establishment of a Femicide Watch in every country.
Sadly, there are still many forms of violence against women and so many manifestations of femicide needing to be addressed.
Through by now 14 volumes of the FEMICIDE publication and numerous events on the topic concerned the FEMICIDE team has raised awareness about heinous unprosecuted crimes, which for many years have been silently witnessed by UN Member States, and will not end their work until violence against women and femicide has been eradicated. A long fight lies ahead of us; however, we are full of hope.
Seeing early volumes of FEMICIDE and the outcomes of our FEMICIDE events being used as important resources by delegates in negotiating and adopting the first resolution on gender-related killings by the General Assembly in 2013 confirmed the relevance of our work. A second resolution followed in 2015.
To serve this purpose, the FEMICIDE team uses the FEMICIDE publication series, the Femicide Watch Online Platform and the FEMICIDE events.
In this volume of FEMICIDE, we pay particular attention to girl refugees, displaced girls and migrant children, and the specific forms of violence and abuse occurring in the context of their flight. The refugee and migration flows in 2015 and 2016 have often been accompanied by abuses of the rights of children, and girls in particular. In such extreme situations as armed conflict, natural disasters, and other emergencies, girls are especially vulnerable to forced marriage, sexual exploitation, trafficking, psychological and physical intimidation, during all stages of their displacement. As girls are the most vulnerable of the vulnerable and are less likely to seek protection and a remedy, this publication focuses specifically on transnational aspects of violence against children, which are often neglected.
In this volume of the Femicide Publication, we are looking at the latest developments on violence against women in conflict and at terrorist groups targeting women and girls. The Security Council has held a landmark session on the implementation of its resolution on women, peace, and security while the General Assembly is grappling with the Secretary General’s proposal on how to deal with violent extremism. The most important documents are included in this publication.
